The Signet Ring

When It Feels Like You’ve Lost Everything

Have You Really Lost Something?

Have you ever felt crushed by loss? Maybe you watched an opportunity disappear, saw a dream fall apart, or felt like life moved ahead while you stood still. Sometimes we look around and think, I’m behind. I missed my chance. I’ll never get where I’m supposed to be.

But there is an important truth worth remembering: you are not behind, and God is not late.

Many of us live with the fear that time is slipping away. We become anxious because we think we only have a limited window to fulfill our purpose. But when we place our hope in God, our perspective changes. We are not simply living for temporary outcomes. We are part of something eternal.

A Lesson From Loss

I remember a girl on my gymnastics team growing up. She was amazing. She seemed to have everything going for her. She won competitions, loved the sport deeply, and even talked about one day going to the Olympics.

Then everything changed.

After an injury, doctors told her she could no longer continue training because it could permanently damage her back.

I still remember seeing the heartbreak on her face.

Watching that made me ask some difficult questions:

  • What happens when something we love gets taken away?

  • How do we keep moving forward when a dream dies?

  • Is it worth pouring ourselves into something that could disappear?

Those questions eventually led me to a powerful symbol found throughout Scripture: the Signet Ring.

What Does a Signet Ring Represent?

In ancient times, a signet ring was much more than jewelry. Kings and rulers used it as a seal of authority and identity. They would press the ring into wax on important documents so people knew the message belonged to the king and had not been altered.

The ring represented ownership, authority, and authenticity.

Life often reminds us that things can disappear. People lose jobs, savings, relationships, possessions, and dreams. If this world is all there is, then eventually everyone loses everything.

But the Bible teaches something different.

There are really two kingdoms people invest in: the temporary kingdom of this world and the eternal Kingdom of God.

One fades away.

The other lasts forever.

Joseph: When Life Makes No Sense

Joseph understood disappointment better than most people.

As a young man, he received dreams from God that pointed toward a significant future. Yet instead of seeing immediate success, his life seemed to unravel.

His brothers betrayed him.

He was sold into slavery.

He was falsely accused.

He was thrown into prison.

Joseph could have easily looked at his circumstances and concluded that his life was ruined.

But he kept trusting God.

Eventually, God used Joseph in ways he never could have imagined. Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams, became governor of Egypt, and helped save countless people from famine.

What looked like loss was actually preparation.

Joseph later tells his brothers:

"You intended harm against me, but God intended it for good."

God did not create Joseph’s pain, but He worked through it.

Nothing was wasted.

A Greater Family and a Greater Inheritance

Jesus tells another powerful story through the parable of the Prodigal Son.

After taking his inheritance and wasting it, the son returned home expecting shame and rejection.

Instead, his father welcomed him with open arms.

One detail stands out:

The father placed a ring on his finger.

The son expected to return as a servant.

The father restored him as family.

The ring was a reminder that his identity had not changed.

The same is true for us.

We may fail.

We may wander.

We may waste opportunities.

But God does not stop calling us His children.

You Are Not Running Out of Time

Many people live with constant pressure because they believe they are racing against the clock.

But God’s timing often looks different than ours.

Sometimes delays are not punishment. Sometimes they are preparation.

Maybe God is building something in you before giving something to you.

Maybe He is teaching, strengthening, or redirecting you.

Instead of asking only, “Why hasn’t this happened yet?” we can also ask:

  • What am I learning right now?

  • How can I glorify God in this season?

  • What is God doing that I cannot see yet?

Living With Purpose and Peace

The Signet Ring carries two reminders at the same time.

First, your life has purpose. Every day matters. You are called to make a difference and represent Christ in the world.

Second, your future is secure. Your inheritance is sealed by God, and nothing of eternal value can truly be taken away.

Purpose without trust creates anxiety.

Trust without purpose creates passivity.

But together they create peace.

Final Reminder

The Signet Ring points us back to three important truths:

You belong to God’s family.

You were created with purpose.

You have an eternal inheritance that cannot be stolen.

The things of this world may come and go, but what God has sealed can never truly be lost.
