In one interview, Paul said that he thought about his mother, Mary, when he wrote this song last 1969. The lyrics personify her as an epitome of strength and comfort, as she reminds us of acceptance of things we cannot change. Paul likewise wrote this at a turbulent time where wars were prevalent around the world. It’s a timely reflection on the world we live in today where so much hate and violence abound. This song now takes on a different meaning for me as it becomes a challenge to let his vision of peace shed light into our hearts. There will always be peace in acceptance and surrender to all that is good in the world.
