A WEAPON AGAINST DARKNESS PT. 2 | A SUPERNATURAL CALLING
There is no expiration date on the purpose God has placed on your life.
It can be easy to look at where you are today and decide that certain opportunities have passed you by. Maybe age has changed what you are physically capable of doing. Maybe you're younger, but the dream God once placed in your heart feels like it belonged to another chapter of your life.
Sometimes it isn't time that makes us question our calling at all. It's what happened along the way.
Loss can do that. Divorce can do that. Illness, disappointment, failure, or a completely unexpected change in circumstances can leave us wondering whether the future we once imagined is still possible.
But God is not limited by the events that interrupted your plans.
If there is still breath in your lungs, there is still purpose for your life.
Scripture tells us that our days are known and appointed by God. That means today isn't an accidental extra chapter at the end of your story. God knew you would be here, at this age, in this season, facing these exact circumstances.
And He is still able to use you.
Stop Reading the Bible Like Everyone in It Was Superhuman
We sometimes read Scripture and unconsciously place its heroes into a category separate from ourselves.
Of course Elijah could experience something supernatural. He was Elijah.
Of course Moses could stand in front of the Red Sea.
Of course David could face Goliath.
Of course Joshua could watch the walls of Jericho fall.
But Scripture repeatedly reminds us that these were real people with real weaknesses, fears, doubts, and limitations.
James makes this point specifically about Elijah:
“Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it didn’t rain on the land for three and a half years.” — James 5:17
Why tell us Elijah was a man just like us?
Because the power behind Elijah's story wasn't Elijah.
It was God.
That changes how we should read these stories.
Instead of simply thinking, Look at the incredible things those people did, we can ask:
What could this same God do through a life completely surrendered to Him today?
And there is another incredible reality for believers. Many of the people we read about in the Old Testament lived before the Holy Spirit came to dwell within believers as He does under the New Covenant.
The God of Scripture hasn't become less powerful.
Impossible Circumstances Don't Intimidate God
Human beings naturally calculate possibilities based on what we can see.
God doesn't have that limitation.
Imagine standing with Moses and the Israelites. Pharaoh's army is approaching from behind while an enormous body of water blocks the only apparent escape.
From a human perspective, there isn't a good option.
But God wasn't looking for an option.
He created one.
The sea opened.
That is why believers can have hope in situations that appear hopeless. Our confidence isn't supposed to come from believing everything will unfold according to our plans.
Our confidence comes from knowing who God is.
When we continually fill our minds with that truth, our perspective begins to change.
We stop asking only safe prayers.
We stop making decisions based entirely on our own resources.
We start leaving room for God to do something only He could do.
Our prayers become bigger because our understanding of God becomes bigger.
Our steps of faith become bolder because we remember who is walking with us.
Faith Has Always Looked a Little Crazy
Hebrews 11 is filled with people who acted because they trusted God before they could see the outcome.
The Israelites marched around Jericho before the walls ever moved.
Rahab protected the spies without knowing exactly how her story would end.
Gideon stepped onto a battlefield despite overwhelming odds.
Others conquered kingdoms, survived fire, escaped the sword, received promises, found strength when they were weak, and became powerful in battle.
None of them could guarantee the outcome before taking the first step.
That's what made it faith.
Faith isn't pretending an obstacle doesn't exist.
Faith sees the obstacle clearly and then remembers that God is greater than it.
You Still Have a Place in the Battle
One of the most dangerous lies we can believe is that we are no longer useful to God.
Maybe you've made mistakes.
Maybe you've lost years.
Maybe your body isn't as strong as it once was.
Maybe life looks nothing like you expected it to look by now.
None of those things surprise God.
He knew every chapter before He called you.
God does not create useless weapons.
If He still has you here, don't automatically assume your assignment is over.
Your role may look different than it did ten years ago. Your methods may change. Your circumstances may change. But God is incredibly good at taking what looks limited in human hands and accomplishing something extraordinary through it.
Throughout Scripture, weakness was never a dealbreaker for God.
Often, it became the very place where His strength was most visible.
So be careful what you allow to occupy your thoughts.
If you continually meditate on your limitations, eventually every opportunity will look impossible.
But if you continually remind yourself of God's power, His character, His promises, and His presence within you, you'll begin looking at those same circumstances differently.
The obstacle may not have changed.
Your perspective has.
The Battle Isn't Yours to Win Alone
Now, some people hear words like battle, weapon, and calling and immediately feel energized.
I'm one of those people.
But maybe you aren't.
Maybe the idea of having some massive spiritual assignment doesn't make you excited at all. Maybe it makes you think, That sounds exhausting. I already have enough going on.
There is good news.
God never asked you to manufacture victory through your own strength.
We aren't desperately fighting in hopes that somehow we can defeat the enemy.
We operate from a victory Jesus has already secured.
The battle belongs to God.
Christ has already accomplished what we could never accomplish ourselves. Satan's ultimate defeat has already been determined.
Our job isn't to replace Jesus.
Our privilege is to participate in what Jesus is already doing.
Luke 4:18 gives us a picture of that mission:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free.”
Jesus came bringing freedom, restoration, healing, and hope into darkness.
And now His Spirit lives within His people.
Your Story Isn't Finished
Don't allow the calendar to tell you what God can still do.
Don't let a painful chapter become the conclusion of your story.
And don't confuse feeling weak with being unusable.
Maybe the dream God placed in your heart has been sitting untouched for years.
Maybe you've stopped praying about something because it started to seem impossible.
Maybe you've quietly decided that someone younger, stronger, more successful, more educated, or more qualified will have to do what you once believed God was asking you to do.
What if you're wrong?
What if this season isn't the end of your calling?
What if it's preparation for another part of it?
The same God who opened seas, collapsed walls, strengthened the weak, shut lions' mouths, and turned ordinary people into world-changing instruments is still God today.
So pray the prayer that feels too big.
Take the step that requires faith.
Pick up the dream you thought you had to bury.
Stop evaluating your future only by what you can accomplish naturally.
God's plans have never depended exclusively on human ability.
If God has given you another day, then give that day back to Him.
There is still darkness that needs light.
There are still people who need hope.
There are still assignments waiting for obedience.
And there is still a supernatural God who can accomplish extraordinary things through an ordinary person willing to say yes.
